Every Step Counts: Walk, Run and Make a Difference this Nelson Mandela Day

Every year on 18 July, South Africans and people around the world pause to honour the life and legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, not only through remembrance, but through action. Mandela Day is a reminder that lasting change begins with ordinary people choosing to do extraordinary things for others. This year, the Nelson Mandela Day Walk & Run invites individuals, families, schools, businesses and communities to lace up their shoes and become part of a movement that celebrates compassion, unity and service. Whether you choose to walk or run, every step taken becomes a symbol of hope and a commitment to building a more just, caring and inclusive society.

Join thousands in Johannesburg on Sunday, 19 July 2026 for the Mandela Day Walk & Run at DP World Wanderers Stadium. This flagship event - part of the new Mandela Legacy Sporting Series - celebrates Madiba’s spirit of community and action. Whether you run 21 km, race 10 km, or walk 5 km with family and friends, every step supports the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s work for social justice.

The Walk & Run is more than a community event; it is a celebration of the values Madiba lived by throughout his life. It is an opportunity to gather across generations, backgrounds and abilities in a shared expression of solidarity and purpose. Along the route, participants are reminded that Nelson Mandela's greatest lesson was never simply about leadership, it was about people. It was about recognising our shared humanity, extending dignity to others and understanding that each of us has the power to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around us.

The Walk & Run is more than a race, it’s a movement. Organised by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, every rand raised supports programs for social justice, education, and community upliftment. As the Foundation notes, the Mandela Legacy Sporting Series (which includes this event) is “a call to action,  encouraging people to walk, run, and ride in support of causes that promote dignity, equality and opportunity”. By participating, runners become part of Madiba’s legacy of service and solidarity. The spirit of Ubuntu will be palpable as individuals, businesses, schools, and NGOs come together to honor Mandela’s values through shared action. It reminds us that every journey towards a better future begins with a single step.
